I’m a bit sad to see the riots happening in my home city, so I thought I’d share a… erm… a thought.
When I look at the rioting I find my self hunting for an explanation of what is going on. When a society reaches a place of such disregard for it’s overall wellbeing that morals, once upheld (however reluctantly) seem to vanish. But then it dawned on me.
This is not about individualism, that is only half way there, this is not a bunch of people who are in reaction to their perceived status as ‘have nots’, nope, this is sadly far more insipid. Burglary could maybe be seen as I have just described, but rioting and looting takes this all one step further.
A looting mob is the complete antithesis of a Christ centred culture that would seek to uphold other citizens and perhaps more than that, selflessly serve those they live alongside (this may be the reserve of idealism, but it’s a good goal none the less). A looting mob is the grimmest example of a society taking not only what it wants, but using the power and anonymity found in a mob to take whatever an individual wants. Simply put, it’s individuals using other individuals for individual gain and that is deeply sad.
